Dr. Tom Jackson is a caring and compassionate psychiatrist with over forty years of experience. He treats a wide variety of mental health conditions including, but not limited to, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and ADHD in adults, adolescents and children.
Dr. Jackson attended Northwestern University School of Medicine (ranked among the top 20 medical schools in the United States) and completed his psychiatric specialty training at the University of California at Irvine. His broad range of professional experience along with a wide range of study and interests allow him to provide a highly personalized and comprehensive approach to each of his patients.
Past experience includes in-patient treatment and out-patient treatment in a variety of settings. He practiced emergency psychiatry for 10 years. He was Medical director of a substance abuse clinic, a day-treatment center and several out-patient clinics including Tri-City Mental Health Center where he supervised a staff of 10 psychiatrists. While in that position he was Director of Clinical Psychiatric Training for the Family Practice Resident Physicians at the Pomona Valley Medical Center. In addition he set up one of the earliest tele-psychiatry programs, receiving both State and National awards for innovation in treatment.
Dr. Jackson has over ten years of experience in private practice. During this time he has achieved 4.7/5 star ratings from both the Vitals and Health Grades rating websites. In addition, he has received a number of Vitals Awards:

One of the best ways to assess a physician is to read reviews that patients have taken the time to share on these websites. If you read Dr. Jackson’s reviews you are likely to find them inspiring and heart-warming.
Dr. Jackson’s past and present hobbies and area of pursuit include medicinal herbs, dietary supplements, martial arts, bodywork, therapeutic applications of sound, hypnosis, hiking, sailing, and futurism (the exponentially increasing impact of information technology on scientific progress and our daily lives). He is an author, inventor (holds 2 U.S. patents), musician, poet, videographer and audio engineer.
Dr. Jackson is now accepting new patients at his recently opened Desert View Health practice in Rancho Mirage. He, and his wife Petra, moved to nearby La Quinta 2 years ago after having lived in the mountain town of Idyllwild for 16 years. Petra is a Marriage and Family Therapist along with offering her services as a Board Certified Personal and Executive Coach. They make such a great therapeutic team that their love for each other and their work has created a uniquely comfortable and healing atmosphere. Their intent when furnishing the office was to make it feel like their second home which has created an atmosphere in which patients feel relaxed and “right at home.” About the only thing missing, they both agreed, was a family dog to greet everyone. So this has inspired the next major project in their lives, which they will be sharing with you.
They have placed a deposit with a breeder and soon there will be an adorable King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, who will go through go through the official training to be a therapy dog (the specialty of the breeder). They are very excited at the prospect of adding this new little girl to the office family. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the breed, they have earned the reputation of being the most loving of all dogs. A contest seems to be forming to choose a name. Will it be Daphne or Daisy or Sophie or……..? Voting will begin soon!
And on weekends there will be regular therapy dog trips to nursing homes and pediatric hospital units to spread the love.
Partly as a result of Dr. Jackson’s rather eclectic background, he has developed a series of therapeutic audio programs for the treatment of sleep disorders and anxiety using a remarkable 3D sound technology. Dr. Jackson readily gives these programs to his patients as part of his treatment approach. He has developed one series of programs for adults and another series for children, for which he wrote a companion guide, “DreamChild Adventures in Relaxation and Sleep.”
The preface to the book was written by the previous Director of the Loma Linda University Sleep Laboratory, Dr. Ralph Downey III, in which he stated: “When you experience the 3D Living Sound technology used to record these programs you won’t believe what they are hearing. The programs will immerse you in a sense of virtual reality with sounds emanating from all around. I am quite sure you will find the experience so unique and engaging that, like me, you will be at a loss for words to describe it. Listening to the children’s programs will engage your child in journeys that are both entertaining and relaxing. And through an array of comforting suggestions and visualizations, brought to life by 3D sound, anxiety and racing thoughts melt away, allowing your child to quickly fall asleep.”
Dr. Downey also assisted in the testing of Dr. Jackson’s adult sleep program on U.S. Air Force pilots, funded by a $500,000 Department of Defense grant. A summary of various research studies on the programs is provided in Appendix H of the DreamChild book.
