Feeling overwhelmed

Are you feeling overwhelmed? If so, you're not alone. To start with, there are all the personal issues: jobs, relationships, finances, health, Add to this the big-picture issues: the Covid pandemic, global warming, social/political strife. Who isn't feeling overwhelmed at times? As a coach and therapist, I teach a long list of coping strategies, and the most important and effective come down to the basics of self-care: stay well-hydrated, get enough rest and sleep, get some exercise and eat a fairly healthy diet. During times of high stress, try to be realistic about your schedule- prioritize and keep some perspective, get small things done and out of the way.
We did not evolve to deal with the stress of constant stimuli, but we did evolve in relationship to nature. So do your best to get outside regularly, where there some trees or greenery, perhaps to a local park, or even just a regular walk around the block can do wonders for you.
In my discussion of this and other topics, the commonsense insights I share are seldom my own ideas. They were gained from my formal training, independent studies, continuing education, from other therapists and even from some of my clients. I have a particular affinity for ideas and techniques that I know really work and thus my dedication to practical, research-based solutions and tools with proven effectiveness for bringing people greater satisfaction and happiness in life.

About Me: I am Petra Schoning, both a California licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Board-Certified Coach. I obtained my Master’s Degree in Marriage, Family and Child Therapy in 1987 and have been licensed in CA as a Marriage and Family Therapist since 1991. I received my certification as a Master Personal and Executive Coach in 2003 through the College of Executive Coaching. I became a Board-Certified Coach in 2012, and in 2020 I received additional training in my current specialty as a Positive-Psychology and Well-Being Coach.
I have practiced in outpatient mental health facilities, provided emergency mental health services in-home and in the field, developed and supervised children’s mental health services (with a final capacity of 75 staff), supervised an emergency mental health team, have been a clinical director, reviewed County mental health programs as appointed by the CA State Mental Health Director, and am currently in private practice as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Board-Certified Coach. I have also been an American Red Cross disaster services volunteer and was on the Board of Directors for a homeless services program.
As a therapist, I am solution-focused and strength-based and also utilize systems theory. My previous coaching specialties include increasing happiness, working with day traders, and coaching women on identifying and living their beauty from within.
I love what I have done and what I do. I consider myself fortunate to have my breadth of experience and to have had the honor of sharing heartfelt time with so many dedicated coaching and mental health professionals.
I can legally provide coaching services world-wide, but as a practical matter my services are in English and usually located in time zones close to Pacific Standard Time. As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I am only licensed to serve people who reside in the State of California. I offer in-person services at our office in Rancho Mirage, CA and teleservices are available for all clients.
